What does it mean to be insulin resistant?

Unfortunately our modern day grain and sugar loaded diet together with not enough movement or exercise means that many people are headed towards being insulin resistant.

But what does this really mean?

When we eat foods that are high in carbohydrates such as breads, pasta, biscuits and soft drinks, our body breaks these down into separate nutrients which includes glucose.

Our bodies are able to cope with a small amount of glucose and little exercise in our system for a while, but we’re not designed to process a massive amount of glucose from this type of diet day after day year after year.

As high levels of glucose in our system are toxic, our body then has to produce excessive amounts of insulin to minimise it.

This can lead to developing a resistance to insulin because of a lifetime of excess insulin production, or even worse…down a path of insulin injections or type 2 diabetes.

A primal low carb, medium protein and high healthy fats diet requires our bodies to produce far less amounts of insulin to balance the carbohydrate/glucose consumption and hence our bodies tend to be more sensitive to insulin rather than resistant, significantly reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
