    What is a health coach?

I bumped into a mate the other day. We spoke about family, a few things going around town, work he had on, his recent holiday overseas and he asked me “What have you been up to mate?” “Health coach” “What’s that?” he says Good question and is certainly one that I hear often. We have all heard of and had a bit to do with Doctors, Specialists, Acupuncturist and Optometrists but not so much health coaches. Do you remember the last time you went to your GP for whatever? How long

What are three barriers that stops everyday people from getting a six pack?

In short the three barriers as I see it… Wrong diet, Wrong exercises & Not being consistent. Let me explain…. I for one had this one wrong….1000’s of crunches and sit ups for years and years and yet nothing. So I did more and more, every time my stomach was screaming to stop, but still nothing, not a single ripple. So I just assumed this was out of my reach forever. That was until I learned how to do it….the Primal way. Firstly, start with a low carbohydrate, medium protein a

What are some mind-blowing facts about exercise, fitness and working out?

Myth 1. Grains are good for you. Myth 2. Exercise is good for weight loss Myth 3. Fat is bad for weight loss Grains are good for you. Most of us live on a standard modern day diet which is high in carbohydrates – grains (eg bread, cereal, pasta, etc) and sugar (eg soft drinks, ice cream etc). When we eat carbohydrates body breaks it down into various nutrients one is glucose which we use for energy. Our bodies burn a small amount of glucose and can only store a small amount i

Is not eating breakfast a healthy way of incorporating intermittent fasting (12-14 hours every night

The principle of what you are saying is true however the results vary greatly depending on your body’s source of fuel ie carbohydrates or fat. Most of us live on a standard modern day diet which is high in carbohydrates – grains (eg bread, cereal, pasta, etc) and sugar (eg soft drinks, ice cream etc). When we eat this our body breaks it down into various nutrients one is glucose. Our bodies burn a small amount of glucose and can only store a small amount in our muscles and li

    Good fat vs bad fat

After many years health and science is finally agreeing that weight gain and heart disease is not directly related to eating fat. A study of the diet habits of 90000 nurses over 20 years, resulting in the publication of 265 papers, showed no significant connection between heart disease and total fat and cholesterol intake. Although other studies have attempted, but none have been able to make the connection that heart disease itself is caused by a high fat diet. The idea that

A hypothetical (but unfortunately quite typical) scenario….

Today we often turn to doctors to prescribe medication to help many people with problems caused by back pain that could be linked to (dietary) inflammation, just to get through a normal day. We dodge the appointment with the physio, who was to going to help with with core and back strengthening exercises, because we are too busy, and just stick with the quick and easy medication. Occasionally we grab a bit of exercise with the office basketball or touch footy team, reliving t

What foods are high in Omega 3?

You may have heard about omega-3 oils and how important they are to our health. If not, research indicates that they help with inflammation and other metabolic diseases. So if you are struggling to get enough omega-3 in your diet eating a lot of oily cold water fish can help as well as taking capsules which can be an easy supplement when taken daily. If you go down this path always store them in the fridge as these a very delicate and damaged if exposed to heat light and oxyg

    Are fats good for you?

Although it contradicts general wisdom many long-term studies have now confirmed that eating healthy fats can actually help prevent cancer & heart disease and form a key component of the eating plan that I follow and coach others. Healthy fats as I have spoken about previously are a combination of saturated and unsaturated fats and provide an excellent source of energy and many nutrients to assist good health. Saturated fat also forms an integral part of our cells membranes.

What does a healthy diet look like?

For many years I have read a swag of books and articles about good nutrition that I thought were the best healthy choices and based my life around this. But it wasn’t until I started the Primal Health Coaching course and began to understand the science (and test on myself) that many “facts” we have been told over many years may not actually be the best things for our bodies…. Myth The core of the healthy diet should consist of 6 to 11 servings of grain based food everyday to

    Are supermarket vegetables healthy?

Unfortunately as good as they look those perfect polished up vegetables and fruit on display at your local big box supermarket often aren’t as nutritional as we’d hope. Genetic modifications, pesticide spray, early picking and artificial ripening by ethylene gas all help to produce “beautiful” looking produce, but it really reduces the nutritional content. My father had a story recently….when shopping at a national chain supermarket he asked the attendant, “What was the best

Can you lose weight on low carb high fat diet?

Image courtesy of “Australian Dietary Guidelines” You are probably aware by now that I am a big supporter of a high fat moderate protein low carb diet particularly when compared to the standard Australian dietary guidelines. So you might ask why would I go against style of eating? Well for many years I ate petty much to the standard Australian dietary guidelines thinking that this was in fact a healthy way to eat. That was until my life was turned upside down when I fell ill

Are vegetable oils good or bad for you?

I don't know about you but for years I thought vegetable and seed cooking oils were healthy. Well they sound healthy….don't they? Did you know – Canola oil is a highly refined and engineered product. Most canola oil when processed looses many of its natural omega 3 fats and is converted into trans fats. (It is believed that trans fats increase our risk of heart disease.) Polyunsaturated vegetable and seed oils commonly used as home cooking oils are also found in many frozen,
